We are delighted to feature Dame Carolyn Fairbairn DBE in our latest Honorary Doctorate Spotlight from the University of Aberdeen.
In June 2019, Dame Carolyn was awarded the Doctor of Honoris Causa (DHC) by the University of Aberdeen, a prestigious title recognising a life’s work that has made a profound impact on society beyond the traditional academic sphere.
A Trailblazer in British Business The University honoured Dame Carolyn primarily for her historic role as the first female Director-General of the CBI (Confederation of British Industry). In this capacity, she served as a vital voice for 190,000 UK companies, navigating them through a period of significant economic and political change.
Strategy & Policy Pioneer Her citation highlighted a career defined by strategic vision, including her tenure as Director of Strategy at both the BBC and ITV, and her service in the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit under John Major. She was recognised as an "inspirational role model" for graduates, particularly those entering business and economics.
Continuing Impact Since receiving her award, Dame Carolyn has continued to shape the corporate and social landscape. She currently serves as Chair of the Royal Mencap Society and holds influential Non-Executive Director roles at Tesco and HSBC, where she remains an active advocate for STEM and boardroom diversity.
