Celebrating Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE
We are proud to feature Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE in our latest Honorary Doctorate Spotlight. In 2017, Glasgow Caledonian University awarded her a Doctor of Science for her outstanding contribution to social enterprise and her work promoting women in STEM.
From Prodigy to Tech Trailblazer Born in London, Dr Imafidon showed extraordinary mathematical ability from an early age. At 10, she passed GCSEs in Mathematics and IT, and at 11, she became the youngest girl to pass A-level Computing. By 20, she earned a Master's degree from the University of Oxford, followed by roles at Goldman Sachs, HP, and Deutsche Bank.
Founding Stemettes Inspired by the 2012 Grace Hopper Celebration, Dr Imafidon co-founded Stemettes in 2013. This social enterprise inspires girls and non-binary young people aged 5 to 25 to pursue STEM careers. Through workshops and the Stemette Society, the movement has reached over 60,000 young people across Europe.
Recognition and Influence Awarded an MBE in 2017, she was also voted the Most Influential Woman in Tech in the UK in 2020 by ComputerWeekly.com. She holds honorary doctorates from various institutions, including the The Open University and the University of Kent. In 2022, she released her book, She's in CTRL, and served as President of the British Science Association for the 2022 to 2023 term. She is also a NATO 2030 Young Leader and a former The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures panellist.
Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University On 2 July 2024, Dr Imafidon was installed as the sixth Chancellor of GCU, succeeding Annie Lennox. In this role, she continues to champion equality, inclusion, and the common good, values that align with her mission to democratise access to STEM.
