Celebrating Dr Bill Lumsden MBE
Today’s Honorary Doctorate Spotlight from Heriot-Watt University celebrates Dr Bill Lumsden MBE, a true pioneer of the malt whisky industry, recognised with an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) in December 2017.
Pioneer of Wood Management Dr Lumsden is widely regarded as the pioneer of wood management, producing whiskies that have fundamentally changed the single malt market. With a PhD in biochemistry, he joined The Glenmorangie Company in 1995 and transformed the art of wood finishing. His bold experimentation involves exotic casks, from Fino Sherry and Claret to Côte de Nuits and Sauternes, alongside the company’s famous slow-growth, air-seasoned Ozark Mountain oak barrels.
Innovation & Heritage Perhaps his most famous creation, Glenmorangie Signet (released in 2008), remains arguably the most innovative whisky created in Scotland for generations, showcasing his ability to marry deep experimentation with respect for heritage. He tours wine regions globally to select casks that impart unique characteristics, creating expressions that whisky lovers cherish worldwide.
Global Recognition Dr Lumsden’s forward-thinking approach has earned him multiple accolades, including Global Ambassador of the Year and Scottish Distiller of the Year (2007), and the International Wine & Spirit Competition’s Outstanding Achievement in Scotch Whisky award (2010). Most recently, he was recognised in the 2025 New Year Honours List with an MBE for services to the Scotch whisky industry.
Strategic Leadership Since 2012, Dr Lumsden has served on the board of The Glenmorangie Company as Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation and Whisky Stocks, where he continues to drive the quality and creativity of their portfolio.
