Celebrating Dr Gregor Townsend MBE
We’re delighted to share our next Honorary Doctorate Spotlight from Heriot-Watt University: Dr Gregor Townsend MBE, Scottish Rugby Head Coach, recognised with an Honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) on 4 December 2023 for his global impact on the sport.
From Gala to Global Stage A revered figure in Scottish and international rugby, Gregor earned 82 caps for Scotland and toured with the British & Irish Lions, becoming one of the standout fly-halves of his generation. His senior career began with Gala RFC before he went on to play club rugby in England, France, Australia and South Africa, and he was the first player to compete in all four of rugby’s professional club competitions: the Celtic League, English Premiership, French Top 14 and Super Rugby.
His performances helped Scotland to a Five Nations title in 1999, and that same year he received an MBE for services to rugby.
Coach, Leader, Innovator After retiring from playing, Gregor worked with the Winning Scotland Foundation before moving into coaching, first as Assistant Coach for Scotland (2009) and then as Head Coach of Glasgow Warriors in 2012. In 2017, he was appointed Scotland Head Coach, a role in which he continues to lead the national side on the international stage.
Under his leadership, Scotland has delivered memorable performances against the world’s best teams, with Oriam, Scotland's Sports Performance Centre at Heriot-Watt’s Edinburgh campus – serving as a key training base for the squad.
A Special Connection with Heriot-Watt & Oriam Receiving his degree at the Edinburgh campus, Gregor highlighted his close personal connection to Heriot-Watt: from the Galashiels campus near where he started and finished his playing career, to his mother’s years working in the campus library, and now to the national team’s regular training at Oriam’s world‑class facilities.
As Ross Campbell, Executive Director at Oriam, noted, this honorary degree recognises both Gregor’s past achievements and his ongoing dedication to inspiring the next generation of athletes.
