Celebrating Dr Jamie Livingstone
Our fourth and final Honorary Doctorate Spotlight from the University of the West of Scotland is Jamie Livingstone, Head of Oxfam Scotland.
From Journalism to Social Justice Leadership Born and raised in Dunfermline, Jamie studied international relations and economics at the University of St Andrews. His career began in journalism as Political Correspondent for STV Group plc News, bringing important stories to Scottish audiences. This foundation in communication and policy understanding has proven invaluable.
Leading Oxfam Scotland Since 2013, Jamie has been at the helm of Oxfam Scotland, where he leads policy and advocacy work focused on reducing inequalities and addressing the climate crisis globally. Before his appointment as Head, he served as Campaigns and Communications Manager at Oxfam, building deep expertise in the organisation's mission. Jamie's work supports Oxfam's global humanitarian and development efforts, collaborating with local communities internationally to deliver life-saving projects and drive lasting change.
Partnership for Purpose A particularly meaningful aspect of Jamie's work is Oxfam Scotland's official partnership with UWS, established in 2012. This innovative collaboration brings together UWS's academic expertise with Oxfam Scotland's social justice and anti-poverty campaigning strengths. Together, they conduct research to inform policy aligned with a shared vision for a more equitable and sustainable Scotland.
Recognition of Impact Speaking about his Honorary Doctorate, Jamie said: "I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition from the University of the West of Scotland, particularly from an institution which has partnered with Oxfam Scotland for many years to help build a fairer and more sustainable Scotland. With so much progress still to make, it was wonderful to receive this award alongside the University's new graduates, who I'm sure will be among the next generation pushing for change in Scotland, the UK, and globally."
As Prof. James Miller FRSE, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, noted: "Jamie's work as leader of Oxfam Scotland is truly inspirational and through his efforts with the charity, he champions many of the same goals and values as UWS, as set out in our Strategy 2030."
