Celebrating Dr Kathryn McPhail DUniv
Today’s Honorary Doctorate Spotlight from the University of Aberdeen: Dr Kathryn McPhail, a distinguished energy executive, entrepreneur and public policy expert.
In June 2023, Kathryn was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) by Principal Professor George Boyne and Pro-Chancellor Professor Iain Torrance, recognising her outstanding contribution to the energy sector, climate action and the University itself.
From Policy to Climate Action Kathryn is the Founder and CEO of EnergyCC, a pioneering platform that unites investors and industry to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. Her career has been defined by the power of partnership. Leading the Mining Partnerships for Development initiative in Brazil, she demonstrated how collaboration could significantly reduce deforestation in the Amazon.
Today, her focus is on methane emissions, the single most effective strategy to limit global warming. Through EnergyCC, she is currently working with regulators in Nigeria to reduce emissions using satellite data, proving that public-private collaboration is a "win-win-win": for climate, government revenues, and local communities.
A Lifelong Connection to Aberdeen Kathryn’s journey began as a student at Aberdeen (MA Political Studies) before earning a Master of Laws at The University of Edinburgh. Her commitment to her alma mater is profound: from 2010 to 2019, she served as a Governor of the University, lending her expertise to its Research, Remunerations and Governance Committees.
"With Distinction Comes Purpose" In her graduation address, Kathryn told students: "When I graduated, global poverty was the driving issue. Today it is climate." She emphasised that having a clear purpose, in her case, the quest for sustainability, is what shapes a productive career.
