Celebrating Dr Martin Gilbert LLD
We are delighted to feature Dr Martin Gilbert LLD in our latest Honorary Doctorate Spotlight from the University of Aberdeen. Martin is perhaps one of the most deeply connected honorary graduate of the University of Aberdeen. He is a rare asset for the institution: a double graduate alumnus, a former leader of the University’s governing body, and a recipient of its highest honour.
A Landmark Recognition In July 2009, the University awarded Martin the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD). This recognised his extraordinary leadership in global asset management and his pivotal role in elevating the Scottish financial sector on the world stage. For Martin, this was a homecoming, having originally graduated from Aberdeen in 1978 with an MA in Accountancy and an LLB.
A Global Financial Powerhouse As the co-founder and long-serving CEO of Aberdeen Asset Management, Martin grew the firm from a small local office into a global giant. His influence continues to shape the industry today as:

Commitment to the Next Generation Martin has also remained a steadfast supporter of the students themselves. Since 2010, he has served as a Patron of The Aberdeen Law Project, a student-run initiative providing pro bono legal services to those in need across the North East of Scotland.
