University Spotlight: University of the West of Scotland
Our first University Spotlight. Each week we shine a light on the country's wonderful institutions, what makes them special and some of the extraordinary people they have recognised with an Honorary Doctorate.
We began with a university of great significance to the Society's founder: the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), a pioneering institution transforming lives through education and innovation across four campuses in Scotland, plus a campus in London.
The UWS Story With roots stretching back to 1808 and the visionary philanthropy of Peter and Thomas Coats, UWS today serves over 16,000 students across Paisley, Ayr, Hamilton and Dumfries. In 2007, the merger of the University of Paisley and Bell College created a dynamic institution uniquely committed to widening participation and world-ready education.
Academic Excellence & Innovation UWS excels across multiple disciplines, from education and social sciences to cutting-edge data science, AI, 5G technology and eye care research. The university is recognised as Scotland's leader in enabling access to higher education for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, earning it the title of Higher Educational Institution of the Year (2022 Herald Awards).
Leadership & Vision Under the visionary leadership of Prof. James Miller FRSE, Principal and Vice-Chancellor (and notably, the first nurse to lead a Scottish university), UWS is charting an ambitious course toward becoming a world-leading institution ranked inside the top 200 globally by 2050.
A Community of Achievers UWS has honoured extraordinary individuals through honorary doctorates, including entrepreneurship advocate Dr Geoff Leask DUniv, Scotland footballer Erin Cuthbert, ocean advocate Lewis Pugh, AI pioneer Prof. Mark Girolami, University Chancellor Dr Yekemi Otaru DUniv, and the Society's founder Andy Campbell, each embodying excellence across sectors and disciplines.
