University Spotlight: University of Aberdeen
We're delighted to spotlight the University of Aberdeen, one of Scotland's most prestigious and historic institutions.
530 Years of Academic Excellence Founded in 1495 by William Elphinstone, Bishop of Aberdeen, at the request of King James IV, the University of Aberdeen is Scotland's third-oldest university and the fifth-oldest in the English-speaking world. Originally established as King's College to train doctors, teachers, clergy and lawyers to serve northern Scotland and the Scottish Crown, the university merged with Marischal College in 1860 to form the modern institution we know today.
The iconic crown steeple of King's College and Marischal College remain powerful symbols of the institution's heritage and its place at the heart of Scotland's intellectual life.
Research Excellence Across Disciplines Today, the University of Aberdeen is a research-led institution of international distinction, with excellence spanning Medicine & Medical Sciences, Engineering, Science, Arts & Divinity, and Social Sciences & Law. The university houses significant research centres and institutes dedicated to addressing global challenges in areas including Data & AI, Energy Transition, Health, Nutrition & Wellbeing, and Environment & Biodiversity.
The university's research community is internationally recognised, with strong track records in clinical medicine, health services research, pure and applied mathematics, natural sciences, computing and social sciences.
A Community of Distinction Throughout its 530-year history, the University of Aberdeen has honoured extraordinary individuals through honorary degrees: leaders across business, public service, medicine, the arts, science and sport who embody the values of excellence and contribution that the university stands for.
Recipients include Dame Carolyn Fairbairn DBE (former Director-General of the CBI), Anne Minto OBE (businesswoman and gender equality advocate), Sir Ian Wood KT GBE (philanthropist and energy industry leader), and Dame Katherine Grainger DBE (Olympian and Chair of UK Sport). These Honorary Doctors represent a living, diverse network of achievement spanning sectors and generations.
Leadership & Future Vision In November 2025, the university welcomed its new Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Edwards, who brings vision and commitment to guiding the institution through an important period of strategic development.
